Startups move fast, and design systems are often dismissed as enterprise luxury. That is a mistake. A lightweight system can actually speed you up.
Start with principles, not perfection
Define a short list of design principles first. They become the lens for every future decision. Perfection is the enemy; consistency is the goal.
Build the smallest useful toolkit
Begin with tokens: colors, typography, spacing, and a few core components. Do not try to componentize every screen. Add patterns as they repeat.
Document as you go
Keep living documentation lightweight. A shared Figma file and a short README in your component folder can be enough to keep a small team aligned.
A good design system is a product for your product team. Invest early, iterate often.
